Confession time: I love doing nothing.
Give me a cozy bed, a warm coffee, my catsāand Iām in heaven. šļøāš
Forget the beachāthis is my kind of paradise.
Now, some might call that lazy.
And yes⦠fair.
But hear me out before you picture me as a croissant-crunching sloth in yoga pants. š„š¦„š§āāļø
Iām not ashamed of my lazy moments. In fact, I hold them with a bit of pride.
In todayās go-go-go culture, stillness can feel like rebellion.
And⦠Iām French. So⦠starting revolutions is kind of our thing. āš¤
But letās unpack this whole laziness thing. Because not all ādoing nothingā is the same.
Next time youāre lying on the couch with no plans, ask yourself:
Why am I doing nothing?
Is it becauseā¦
A. Iām tired and actually need rest. š“
B. Iām stuck (hello procrastination). š
C. I genuinely love slowness and the art of being. šļø
Letās break it down:
A. Real rest is sacred
We should normalize sleeping more, saying ānoā to plans, and doing absolutely nothingājust because our nervous systems need it. š
B. Being stuck isnāt restful
Ever felt frozen, spinning in your own head, while your inbox glares at you like it knows your deepest flaws? š§ Yeahānot relaxing.
Hereās what helps me: do one small thing, but do it all the way.
Like⦠emptying the dishwasher (yes, every last spoon).
One simple, mindful act gives me a tiny hit of completionāand that little hit? It builds momentum.
Sometimes, instead of forcing myself to face the task thatās triggering dread or doubt (like inbox doom), I shift to something neutral but doable. Thatās not avoidanceāitās strategy. Psychologists call this behavioral activation: taking small, meaningful actions to shift your internal state. And it works.
So no, I didnāt answer my emails.
But my dishes? Sparkling.
And my nervous system? Slightly more regulated. š§½āØ
C. Ahh, the joy of Yin
You're doing strictly nothing... not because youāre tired. Not because youāre blocked.
Just for the love of stillness. This one? Chefās kiss. Letās celebrate it more. š§āāļø
Because hereās the thing: our culture is very Yang.
Go-go-go. Faster, harder, stronger. š
And while Yang has its place (yay action!), it needs its counterpart.
Enter: Yin.
Stillness. Softness. Listening. Witnessing. Yielding.
But hereās the twist: balance isnāt about picking sides.
Itās not Yin or Yang. Itās Yin in Yangāand Yang in Yin. āÆļø
Thatās where the magic lives. āØ
Think of it like this:
⢠Softness in power
⢠Slowness within strength
⢠Listening within action
⢠Surrender within effort
Thatās whyāeven in a fiery flowāyouāll often hear me say:
āGive it time. There is power in slowness.ā
āCan you soften the parts of you that donāt actually need to hold?ā
āFind the sweet spot: just enough effort, nothing more.ā
Because balance isnāt about extremes.
Itās about dancing in the in-between.
Not too much, not too little.
Not half-and-halfābut a merging, a weaving, a quiet meeting point of opposites.
And yes, if youāre one of my trainees, you know how much I love that word: equilibrium.
To me, itās the secret ingredient in yoga. The gold. The essence.
A little fire in the stillness. A little stillness in the fire.
So next time youāre in a powerful pose, pause and ask:
Where is my Yin hiding right now? šµļøāāļø
Can I let it co-exist with the Yang I love so much?
Your turn!
Whatās your relationship with rest, stillness, and (ahem) laziness? Hit comment ā Iād love to hear from you! Your stories inspire me, and connection is the real yoga. āØ
With softness, stillness, and a dash of rebellion,
Fanny
